Healthy Chocolate Diet

If you do a search on the term “chocolate diet” you will get many links.  You will be offered many types of weight loss diets based on chocolate, hence the term “Chocolate Diet.”

No, chocolate diet is not an oxymoron (a self contradictory term or statement).  You could eat chocolate and lose weight.  For years, the general belief was that chocolate was not good for your health.  Chocolate was tied up with other indulgent foods such as ice cream and candies.  In other words, “If it is so good, it cannot be good for you.” Now, we are starting to hear different opinions.  Which do you believe?

To answer this question, one must examine chocolate more carefully.  Conventional chocolate has several components: cocoa or cocoa liquor as we call it in the industry (no, it does not have alcohol), cocoa butter, lecithin, and flavoring.  Milk chocolate has also milk derivative.  To see the advantages and disadvantages, one must look at the components, and weigh them against each other.

We will start with the most common and many times highest percentage component, sugar.  There is no doubt about the fact that sugar is not healthy, nor does it help weight loss.  As a matter of fact, sugar is on the top list of what is causing weight gain. So how can chocolate be good for you? Many experts will tell you you achieve this by cutting down on the percentage of sugar.  Some experts go as far as giving it numbers.  You may have read an article telling you that you must have at least 70% cocoa in the chocolate.  I am telling you now, this is an arbitrary number.  The reality is the less sugar the better.  At Healthy Chocolate, we came up with the best solutions - no sugar at all.  We use Xylitol which is healthy and does not turn into fat.  So, whatever percent of cocoa we put in the chocolate it is 100% beneficial.

It is very important to recognize the fact that not all sugar substitutes were created equal.  Artificial sweeteners actually increase your insulin resistance causing you to gain weight.  Some natural sweeteners such as maltitol, are known to create some bad health hazards, and are not that tasty.  Xylitol tastes almost the same as sugar and has many benefits.  It is the perfect fit for the chocolate diet.

Now let us look at milk and its derivatives.  There are many opinions about milk, but I can tell you one thing for certain: it will not help you lose weight.  Therefore, we took the best approach, no milk or milk derivative, a fact which again make us the best choice for your chocolate diet.

Once we dispensed with the bad stuff let us look at the good staff: Cocoa has many known benefits:

  1. Cocoa fights hunger – A University of Copenhagen study found that a few nibbles of dark chocolate will lead us to eat about 15% less at our next meal.  One study showed that just the smell of chocolate led to the release of a hormone that helps control hunger (per Monica Bearden, Ph.D., co-author of Chocolate: A Healthy Passion).
  2. Cocoa also contains antioxidants that play a role in killing appetite.  Our chocolate is processed at the lowest possible temperatures, maintaining as much of the antioxidants in the cocoa as possible.
  3. Cocoa kills cravings – Surveys show that chocolate is the food we crave the most. When people deprive themselves, it leaves them with constant yearnings.  By allowing a little chocolate, it provides a significant degree of contentment which translates into eating less.
  4. Cocoa blocks fat! – An Italian study found that eating dark chocolate every day for two weeks significantly improved levels of fat-storage hormones in the overweight volunteers.
  5. Cocoa boosts mood – Numerous studies show a positive correlation between mood and chocolate.
  6. Chocolate is a delight – Even before cocoa was made into chocolate, it was notice that eating chocolate is a pleasurable experience.  There’s clearly something about the chemicals in cocoa that triggers pleasurable responses in the brain that most diets fail to do.  Consuming chocolate as part of a balanced diet can help trigger these pleasurable brain responses thereby alleviating the craving to consume something else to produce them.

So here is my advice to you.  If you want to go on a chocolate diet, find on the Internet the chocolate diet that fits you best.  Consulting a dietician or a health care professional is always a good idea.
